There are many places to visit and things to do in the surrounding area of Yalikavak and the Bodrum Peninsula. Here are just a few suggestions:
Yalikavak
See our main section on the village and it's facilities here.
Bodrum - (17km from apartment)
Bodrum, home of the famous Greek historian Herodotus, is these days better known as a popular holiday resort. Here you will find villages of white houses trimmed with purple bougainvillea and miles of sandy beaches with a variety of water sports.
This charming bustling town attracts a diverse mix of visitors who stroll along its long palm-lined waterfront, while elegant yachts fill the marina. Not far from the town, you can swim in clear, tideless, warm seas. Underwater divers explore the numerous reefs, caves and majestic rock formations. Bodrum has gained the reputation as the centre of the Turkish art community with its lively, friendly and Bohemian atmosphere and many small galleries. The evenings in Bodrum cater for all tastes from relaxing in one of the many restaurants or cafes, dining on fresh seafood and other Aegean specialties, to some of the best clubs in Europe which keep going until dawn!
Aqua-park Dedeman Bodrum - (15 minute drive from apartment, located on the main Ortakent to Bodrum road)
The children - and most adults! - will enjoy the attractions provided here. The park was established on an area of 40 000m2 in 1993. It offers visitors a variety of features including pools, a jacuzzi, wave machine, water slides and restaurants. Entry fee in 2006 was 29 YTL per adult, 19 YTL per child over 6. Under 6 are free. Lockers on offer as well as a "credit card" arrangement for food and drinks. You can credit your entry card with cash at reception allowing you to place all valuables in the locker. Open during Turkish school holidays.
Myndos at Gumusluk - ( 10 minute drive from Apartment)
Gumusluk is 45 kilometers from Bodrum
and is set amidst tangerine groves. It is a lively fishing port, with numerous fish restaurants along the promenade, displaying a wide variety of locally caught seafood. Thanks to strictly enforced building prohibitions, the sea front has kept its original appearance and fishing village charm. No cars are allowed in the central area. The history of the town is at least as old as that of Bodrum. Gumusluk is the site of a Lelege town founded 5,000 years ago, then called Myndos. You can also snorkell over the sunken city. Visiting Rabbit island - you may paddle over to it! - is a must.
Turgutreis - (15 minutes drivefrom apartment)
Every Saturday a large noisy market is held here selling vegetables, fruit, spices, nuts, bedding and the more touristy offerings of handbags, "Gucci"(!) watches, belly dancing outfits, fake designer clothing and turkish delight. Many sellers offer the "Best Asda price" and be prepared to take part in some friendly bartering!
